A writer from her early childhood, Alex Flinn has become famous for such works as Beastly, A Kiss in Time and Breaking Point, to name but a few. In 2011 Beastly will be released as a film starring Alex Pettyfer, Justin Bradley and Mary-Kate Olsen. We caught up with Alex to chat to her about her life and of course, cheese.

Just how important was cheese to your childhood?

Cheese was extremely important! My father was a ship chandler (basically, they supply ships with all the food and supplies they need to go out to sea), and so his company sold large wheels or jars of cheese. He would often bring cheese home, wheels of bleu cheese a foot across or gallon jars of feta. It was a great day when the cheese came home. What was interesting was that the taste of the cheese was always different, even if it was from the same place. So, sometimes, the bleu cheese was sharper than others, for example, and we had discussions about whether or not it was good. I ate a bagel or toast with bleu cheese or feta almost every day for breakfast.

Here is an interesting story: My husband and I married a few months before Hurricane Andrew hit Miami. A few days before the hurricane, my father gave us a huge can of feta, a block about 8″ square. After the hurricane, the refrigerator went out, and the cheese was destroyed (Since feta is a soft cheese, it didn’t have a chance). In the years that followed, we both have repeatedly mentioned what a shame it was about that cheese!

How has that followed into your adult life?

Oh, I love cheese, and if I’m in a restaurant, I will almost always order the Greek salad. There is a local chain called Offerdahl’s that makes a salad with feta and Craisins, which is really good too. If you don’t have an Offerdahl’s near you, you could make it at home, with romaine and a nice vinaigrette dressing.

Is there a specific type of cheese that you used to eat a lot, but no longer do? If so, why is this?

I’d have to say kaseri. It’s a Greek cheese and not readily available in the supermarket. Since my father’s death, I really pretty much only eat it at church Greek festivals . . . where it is served flaming, called saganaki (You should try it if you haven’t).

What is your favourite cheese nowadays and what’s your favourite way to eat it?

Feta, in the aforementioned Greek salad, though I do make a lot of recipes with cheddar and mozzarella too.

How many mentions of cheese are there in your upcoming novel, A Kiss in Time?

I didn’t think there were any, but I just checked and there are six, which just shows how subliminal cheese is in my mind. The first is on page 7 (of my manuscript — don’t know where it will fall in the finished book), where the princess describes the various luxuries being prepared for her sixteenth birthday, and she mentions “cheese from Switzerland.” Yes, I could have chosen chocolate, but I chose cheese. In another portion of the book, the hero has some great struggles, but he is provided with bread and cheese for sustenance.

A Kiss in Time comes out April 28, if you want to print this around then. I’d be happy to answer any other questions regarding cheese.

How much cheese do you eat in an average week?

Quite a bit. Cream cheese on a bagel in the morning, then usually some kind of sandwich with a slice of cheese for lunch. I don’t usually have cheese for dinner, unless it’s grated romano cheese on pasta.

What’s your favourite type of cheese flavoured crisps (or chips, I guess)?

Doritos are probably my favorite, but I end up eating quite a lot of Cheez-Its because my kids eat them.

How would you best sum up cheese using four words?

The loveliest comfort food

Since the break up of the band Nicki – formerly known as Erin Tanner – has gone solo with singles such as Wild And Stupid, and Can’t Dance With Me.

Nicki Foxx has also found success as an actress (appearing alongside Aaron Carter in Popstar) and as a model (most recently as the Dirty Shirty Girl of the month). As with all the best popstars, Nicki is a celebrity who loves cheese.

What’s your favourite cheese and why?
I love Velveeta cheese because it melts amazingly! Yum Yum.

How often do you eat cheese?
I eat it at least three times a week… oops!

If you had to compare yourself to a cheese, which would you most be like?
Spicy Jack would have to be it! It’s spicy but not too spicy! It makes you wanting more!

What’s the strangest cheese you’ve ever had?
Goat cheese… I hate it… really funky taste!

Would you ever write a song about cheese?
No, I’m sorry not that into it!

Who’s the biggest cheese lover you’ve met in the celebrity world?
I’m not sure, sorry!

If you were going to be stuck on a desert island for the next year and you could only eat three types of cheese while you were there, what would you pick?
Velveeta, of course, Spicy Jack, sharp cheddar.

Do you have a secret ingredient when you make mac and cheese?
I always eat my mac and cheese with ketchup, I know kinda weird (laughs) …and salt and pepper!

As well as her passion for music, Gwenno is also a big fan of cheese. The beautiful blond (above), took the time to answer a few questions about what cheese means in her life.

As a Pipette you’ve had many different colours and lengths of hair, but you now seem to have settled on short and blonde. Is this because you feel this most makes your head look like a block of cheese?
Perhaps, I mean, I absolutely LOVE the stuff so it wouldn’t surprise me if it were in my subconscious.

What is your favourite cheese? What is it about this cheese that you particularly like?
I’d probably go for a Gorgonzola or a soft blue cheese. I love the really smelly, potent stuff these days.

Are there any kinds of cheeses that you avoid?
Any supermarket value mild cheddar. It’s the worst thing you’ll ever taste in your life.

How many different animals’ cheeses have you tried? How do they compare?
Goat’s cheese is up there in my top 5, but apart from the that and the regular cow’s milk ones no other animal immediately springs to mind.

This first thing you said to me is that you love cheese. Have you ever met someone in the music industry with a love to rival yours?
I don’t think so, it really is my favourite food. Everyone in the band loves cheese but I’m not sure that their excitement matches mine when we walk into a new venue and they’ve prepared a cheese board.

Your personal MySpace page has a song about a drink. Have you ever thought about writing a song about a cheese?
I’m sure I must have written one when I was little with my sister and my Dad, we always wrote songs about food, and traffic lights.

After a night out you’ve gone to a takeaway and ordered chips and cheese. You’re ravenous. Do you dig in straight away or do you wait for the cheese to melt? What do you think a psychologist would have to say about your answer?
I wouldn’t eat cheese with chips after a night out. I think it’s quite important to be able to appreciate the moments when you do eat cheese, and I like to eat good cheese when I can. The only exception that I’d make is for a McDonald’s cheeseburger or QPWC.

Do any of your fans know about your love for cheese? Have any of them ever bought you some as gift?
They might do now! I’m not sure if I’d ever want a block of cheese as a gift though, any large quantity of cheese makes me feel a little nauseous, there’s a cheese shop in Victoria Station that I’ve never had the guts to enter as it makes me feel sick every time I walk past it. I think cheese, like anything else, is perhaps best enjoyed in moderation.

Lisa Yee has led a varied life – her jobs to date include being paid to eat chocolate, writing a speech for a president (which was, she admits, later got re-written) and she has been a judge at cheese sandwich contest.

She has, however, found fame predominantly as an author and Lisa Yee’s latest novel, Absolutely Maybe, is available now.

What’s your favourite cheese and why?
I’m a pretty basic gal. A like a good brie, and smoked cheddar is nice.

How often do you eat cheese?
Hmmm… I’d say a couple of times a week. Maybe more. I use it cooking all the time, like sprinkling shredded mozzarella over homemade soup.

Do you think cheese works best as a starter, main course or dessert?
I think it can be all three, but I mostly serve it as a starter, usually with some crackers and apple slices or grapes.

When you were judging the cheese sandwich contest did you come across any new ideas that you’ve since taken into your life?
The “Make Your Own Cheese Sandwich” contest was sponsored by Florida’s Dairy Farmers and was for kids. I remember one recipe involved cheese and Skittles. Another sandwich was cheese and potato chips. I really didn’t embrace any of the ideas I came across.

What’s the secret to making a good cheese sandwich?
Simplicity. My favourite is to get a slice of sourdough or French bread, put a thin layer of olive oil on it and some salt and pepper. Then put a couple of slices of avocado on it and top with brie. Then broil and eat. Heavenly!

It’s said that eating cheese late at night gives very vivid dreams – has this ever been the case for you? Have you ever used any of these as ideas in your books?
I can’t say that I’ve ever had wild dreams due to eating cheese. Then again, I’ve never tried to trace the gastronomical origins of my dreams. I guess the next time I eat cheese, I will try to track what happens in my sleep.

Has cheesed played a significant role in the creating of any of your books?
Cheese is in my novel Absolutely Maybe. The main character, who calls herself Maybe (her mother named her Maybelline after the cosmetics company), makes herself a cheese sandwich in one scene. And later in the book, another character grabs a big hunk of cheese and just starts eating it. Plus Maybe works on a taco truck, so of course cheese is mentioned.

Do you think it would be possible to write a story with cheese as the main character?
As for cheese being the main character. I think that would hard, unless it’s a picture book like The Stinky Cheese Man.

He has competed for this honour the last three years – most infamously in 2008 with the song I Love The Girls Of 13 Years Old – but is yet to be selected to sing for his country.

Sasha Bognibov is also in the band After Rehearsal.

He’s a man of few words, but then I’m a man of fewer Moldovan words. Here’s what he had to say about cheese.

What is your favourite cheese-based recipe?
I just eat it the way it is or in salads and pizza.

If you could only eat three types of cheese ever again, what would you pick and why?
I would eat any qualitative type. ‘Cause it must contain useful elements, vitamins, etc.

If you had to describe your favourite cheese to an alien who had never experienced cheese before, how would you do it?
I will speak about its use for health, will say that its colour is something close to beige and yellow, the taste and the smell reminds of milk, but it’s not liquid; a meal is more complete with it.

How much cheese do you eat a month?
Something about 400-500 grams per month.

In an episode of the Simpsons, Homer once ate 64 slices of cheese. How many do you reckon you could eat in one sitting?
Probably I could eat something about 35 slices. But I never eat so much in one sitting.

Is there a Moldovan cheese that you would recommend to people in the UK?
Probably not. I don’t think it’s more special. Here in Moldova people don’t remember the sorts of it as far as I know.

Which country do you think produces the nicest cheeses?
I heard that it’s Netherlands and Switzerland if I’m not mistaken.

You say cheese figures a great deal in your novel Not Like You. What is the relationship between cheese and your main character, Kayla, and why is it so important?
Cheese is the perfect food for Kayla, a 15-year-old girl who has taken care of her alcoholic mother for years and is now trying to live her life more independently. It’s perfect because Kayla is not exactly a gourmet chef, and she can eat cheese right out of its wrapper. Plus, cheese is a comforting food – and this girl needs a whole lot of comforting. Last, cheese can be purchased inexpensively, so it fits into Kayla’s extremely small budget.

When writing about cheese in your novels, how much do you take from personal experience?
A lot. Whenever I write about food in my fiction, I draw on my own sensory-filled memories of tasting, smelling, and looking at food. I’m currently working on a novel set in India, so I’m pulling from my experiences eating curry and rice and chutney while I lived in that country. And paneer, of course. Mmmm. Might have to have some palak paneer for dinner tonight.

Speaking of personal experience, what would you say separates your encounters from other cheese eaters?
Sometimes my cheeses talk to me. Each type has a distinct voice and personality. For example, blue cheese asks a lot of challenging questions, while Monterey Jack is kind of quiet and a good listener, you know? You don’t? Your cheese don’t talk to you? Oh, never mind.

If you were going to create a cheeseboard for a fancy dinner party, what would you select to serve?
I don’t get too fancy with cheeses. I’d include brie, for sure. A soft, herb goat cheese. Some creamy Pt. Reyes Blue Cheese. And maybe a cheese fondue with small chunks of olive bread.

What’s the worst craving you’ve ever had for cheese?
I can tell you exactly: I was out of breath and chilled to the bone at 18,000 feet elevation on Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and it was three o’clock in the morning. A bitter wind had brought the temperature down to zero degrees Fahrenheit and I’d been hiking up to the summit at a snail’s pace since midnight. Every once in a while I forced myself to take bites of a protein bar, but what I desperately wanted—and didn’t have—was a nice hunk of cheese!

What was your most remarkable experience with cheese?
On another wilderness adventure—this time a cross-country skiing expedition in northern Minnesota—I became chilled while setting up camp at dusk. The temperature was 20 degrees below zero and dropping, and my inability to get warm scared me. One of my companions asked if I’d eaten lunch. I hadn’t: we’d crossed a frozen lake at midday, skiing into a headwind, and I hadn’t managed to eat more than a bite or two. I pulled the remains of my lunch from my pocket, and there was my uneaten chunk of sharp cheddar. I wolfed it down and within minutes, warmth seeped through my veins and I stopped shaking.
